The Effects of a sedentary Lifestyle

Many Americans across the world fail to meet the proper physical activity
guidelines set for us by many health professionals. There are so many negative
health effects from living a sedentary lifestyle. It is very important that we understand the extent of the issue, the health effects that come with a sedentary lifestyle, and ways to counteract being sedentary, so that we can live long and healthy lives!

Why is living a sedentary lifestyle a concern?

not obtaining the proper amount of physical activity is associated with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, several cancers, and obesity.(CDC, 2019, para. 2)

According to the AHA journal Circulation, there are approximately up to 250,000 deaths due to the lack in exercise.

"high total sedentary time and high sedentary bout duration together were associated with the highest risk for all-cause mortality."(Diaz, K. et al., para. 22)

The World Health Organization recommends that adults aged 18-64  participate in
at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or at least 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity in a week. At least 23% of adults and 81% of adolescents
do not meet the guidelines set forth by the World Health Organization. (Martins, L. et al., 2020, para. 1)

Now that we have identified how physical inactivity is a global issue, let's look at the direct effects on the body.
